What are the causes of acid reflux?
There are individual variations but common mechanisms include:
The relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter
Increasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach
Increasing the stomach pressure
Making the esophagus more sensitive to the irritating effect of stomach acid.
